thoughts on email services

I've had a gmail for a long time but tried Proton Mail after hearing about it on Podcasts like Ask Noah Show sometime in 2016. Proton seemed like a good idea and it prompted me to start using my own domain for email. I remember the Proton documentation was easy to follow.

However, the Proton webmail client wasn't any better than Gmail and I found I have no need for encrypted email really. Most of the time, I'm just going to be sending to someone else's Gmail or similar, right?

So for years I continued to use Gmail for existing things and Proton for professional things like getting hired. Over the years they started adding other services like Drive, VPN, and even a password manager. I never cared for these added services too much as I was trying to self-host most of these if I could anyway. Although the free VPN service comes in handy at times.

In 2022 or so I started trying out Fastmail with another custom domain. I found Fastmail documentation to be just as good as Proton's but Fastmail has one killer feature I like which is that I as an account admin, could access the inbox of other teammates, or in my case, family members.

Since I have young kids in the modern times, they inevitably want to sign up to play games which require an account. I don't really want those emails in my account so with custom domains on Fastmail I can create ad-hoc email addresses using wildcard addressing. Additionally, I could send it to their own email inbox and just access it as an admin if needed.

Hey for a minute. I've been using Fastmail with custom domains and like a lot of its features but I'm considering giving hey another run.

Basically I'm really interested in embracing the hey way because I hate organizing email and just let it pile up and rely on search anyway.
